FACE IS THE CHIEF SEAT OF BEAUTY
Ptosis is a condition where in the upper eyelid falls or droops down more than it is normally required to and this causes vision obstruction. Ptosis can be caused by injury, lesions or problems with the nerves of the eye. The surgery was performed under general anesthesia for this boy but can be done under local anesthesia for adult cooperative patients.
Sometimes tumors like neurofibroma can involve the upper eyelid that may interfere with the function of the eyes. She had had two earlier surgeries elsewhere but the problem was not corrected. This patient was operated upon under local anesthesia at Richardsons hospital to give a functional and esthetic outcome.
A very rare case ( also is published in the literature as the first case with both upper and lower eyelid reconstruction after human bite!) with the loss of most of the upper and lower eyelids reconstructed with local flaps and grafts by Dr Richardson and his team. The article can be assessed in the link below ….
Lagophthalmos is a condition where the involved eyelid fails to close completely. It is usually seen after facial paralsysis on that side and sometimes can be after an accident or rarely from birth as well. This can be easily corrected surgically using a weighted gold coin in the upper lid and some canthoplasties. The surgery is carried out under local anesthesia and the patient can go home immediately following the surgery. Downtime is a few hours and the results are permanent.
Exophthalmos refers to bulging of the eye outside the orbit. This condition can be dealt with surgery such that the eye assumes a more inward appearance that looks more natural. Similar conditions can be also seen in syndromes like Cruzon’s and Aperts and can be corrected.
Accidents that cause fractures and tissues issues around the eyes are complex as not only the hard tissue that is bone that needs to be correctly aligned, the nasolacrimal duct and the position of the eye needs to be taken into consideration. Due to the break of the bones around the eye, there can be problems like the eye been moved downwards, patient sees double or the eye is pushed back ward. These problems can be tackled so that the eye assumes a normal relationship by correctly approximating the fractures that have occurred around the eye.
